Earthtwine® Soil Degradable Twine

Earthtwine® Terra is a soil degradable crop support twine that is not only biodegradable but specifically biodegrades at ambient temperatures with soil contact through microbes present in healthy soil.
Terra offers growers access to a biodegradable, soil friendly alternative to replace conventional polypropylene twine even if they do not have, or prefer not to use, a hot composting system.
Compostable twines biodegrade in composting conditions of high heat and humidity. This means that growers looking for a biodegradable twine option are excluded from using these twines unless they maintain or have access to composting facilities. Earthtwine® Terra eliminates the need for hot composting conditions because it biodegrades at ambient temperatures and with soil contact.
Earthtwine® Terra was initially developed for use in kiwifruit orchards, where dual tensile strength twines are used. The higher tensile strength is needed for stringing in high wind zones and tying the heavier male vines, while the regular tensile strength twine is used for stringing in protected areas and for general tying of vines.

Earthtwine® Terra

The benefits of using a soil biodegradable twine like Earthtwine® Terra:
  • Eliminate the need to dispose of used twine and plant material after harvest by converting both into valuable mulch instead. There is no need to separate used twine and plant material but for best results, they should be cropped up.
  • No need to hunt for dropped pieces of twine as they will not build up in soil like plastic twine would. Earthtwine® Terra simply breaks down when exposed to the microbes in healthy soil and is converted to biomass.
  • Soil biodegradable twine does not require a high heat environment to breakdown. It just needs exposure to the microbes in healthy soil.
  • No enduring microplastics or undesirable residues remain after Terra breaks down.
Please note: soil biodegradation usually takes notably longer than hot composting to breakdown plant material and this also applies to biodegradable twine. If the soil degradable twine was placed in a composting environment, the degradation time is significantly faster.
